I think these might be my favourite portraits of my own family so far! Last year was our first photoshoot with all of our children (Peter is our last baby!) and that made it so special, but to have him just a little bigger this year, and toddling about like a little child (rather than a tiny newborn) was so perfect. I can see these being portraits I keep up on my walls forever: to remember that short time when all four of them were hovering somewhere between babyhood and growing up. I’ve already printed all of my favourites in a book to add to my growing shelf of our family’s portrait albums– I think we have about ten of them by now!
It’s funny, when we began having our family photographed each year, my husband didn’t really see the point; he just went along with it (quite good-humouredly) for me. But now, when we look back on those early photoshoots together, he cherishes having done them just as much as I do. These books are some of our most very precious possessions.
A tremendous thank you to Toronto photographer Emily Michelson for beautifully capturing our family of six during her Vancouver portrait sessions trip– we had such a fun and relaxed evening with her!

about the session: being in front of the camera
I find it so helpful to be in front of the camera myself once a year with Adam and our kids– it reminds me about the stress of choosing outfits, the bustle of getting ready and out the door, trying to make sure the little one naps well that day…. the list goes on! When I meet my families at sessions, I truly understand all the effort it takes to get there. Having family photos of my own also reminds me of how precious and important they are, so that I’m always pushing to photograph families in an ever more meaningful way.
