This Toronto family session was actually planned to take place at the Scarborough Bluffs, but we changed locations at the last minute (due to a full park at the Bluffs!), and ended up photographing at this architectural delight right on the edge of Lake Ontario, at the easternmost end of The Beaches.
It was an absolute pleasure running around after these two little monkeys– I know their mom and dad and I (and their lovely nana too, who came along to help!) all got quite a workout capturing these portraits. My favourite kind of session!
And what a gorgeous spot– the buildings have a stunning art deco / cathedral look, with rolling green hills between, and a sandy beach right at the bottom. It’s truly about as close as we come to a castle here in Canada! ;)
We met in early September, near sunset. The weather was a bit fickle, which made pre-scouting tricky (the sun didn’t know what it wanted to do!) but for the duration of the session we had dreamy overcast clouds; not too grey, just lovely soft light. I can’t wait to head back to Toronto for more family portrait sessions this year!

about the session: bringing a pet!
I just love capturing families with their pets– it’s a bit of extra work for everyone, but the photographs are so special. A few things I always recommend: firstly, we will choose a special location, as not everywhere allows dogs! A specified dog beach is often a good plan, as I usually find dog beaches prettier that the regular beaches anyway– lots of greenery, and a bit less manicured. The second is to bring along someone to help. We usually photograph with a pet for just a short part of the session, so to have someone there to be with them when they’re not in photos, or to bring them home after they are finished (and we continue on with just human family members) is really helpful.
