I loved photographing this beautiful family of five in the mountains, just an hour’s drive from Vancouver, Canada. I really love the chaos of photographing families with three or more children– it’s certainly more work: so many more faces to have smiling all at once, more combinations to capture, more emotions, more meltdowns, more everything! But I have three children myself, so I feel right at home in the midst of the craziness. This session was on such a gorgeous evening, filled with wild blackberry eating, running, cuddling, tickling, and plenty of laughter.

about the session: my gear
I nearly always work with very minimal gear, as I personally find that photographing young children is not conducive to setting up lights, using mobile reflectors or flags, or even switching lenses often. Over the past decade I’ve mastered the use of available natural light, allowing me to shoot with one camera and lens combination. This makes the whole experience much less intimidating to my families– none of whom are professional models, of course! My current gear is a Canon 5D Mark IV + 50mm 1.2 lens (plus one backup set of gear in case of malfunction). One thing I love about this camera is that it has double card slots, which means that in case one memory card malfunctions, the captures are all safe on the other one.
